iTunes music store = DANGEROUS.

Before I flip the hell out and buy 85 cds, I want to sample miles davis so I know what cd to buy. Ideas? Uncles? I'm thinking Kind of Blue, but they have these "best of" cds that are tempting.

I really just want more old jazz/blues. Louis Armstrong, Miles, Ella Fitzgerald...Billie Holiday in the pre-scary-drug period. mmm, and Nat King Cole. Help! Suggestions!

I dunno.

You should get the cd by Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man, and also get Felt Mountain my Goldfrapp.

Miles Davis suggestions:

Modal Period: Kind of Blue
Cool Period: Birth of the Cool
Third Stream Period: Sketches of Spain
Fusion Period: Bitches Brew

The iTunes Miles Davis Essentials disc looks like a pretty good sampling of his pre-fusion stuff.

If you want to get into his 1980s bizarro pop-oriented stuff, check out Doo-Bop.

In the realm of Cool Jazz, you might also be interested in checking out Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and Lee Konitz. For Hard Bop, check out Freddie Hubbard, Cannonball Adderly, anything by Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers, and Clifford Brown. And, of course, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Paul Chambers, et. al.

I just HAVE to say that most of the above artists are ones Arthur listens/listened to and which you HATED. Funny how one's perspective changes, hmmmm?

Yeah, fantastic. Now the only step left is to morph into an unlikable dick.

you set yourself up for that.

Not exactly, Allie dear. But like your perspective on Jazz, I believe your perspective on Arthur will ultimately soften. You will eventually see him, not as an unlikable dick, but as a basically decent human being with some INCREDIBLY annoying personality traits. :)

Do you really want to get into this discussion with me in a public forum?

Get some Coltrane despite the drugs. He's still good.

And Dave's right, especialy about Konitz.

You might also like Roland Kirk: he's eccentric. You know, unlike all those other jazz musicians.

Further, to include a musucian playing in THIS century, there's Charlie Hunter.
